Composting has been going on for as long as there's been vegetables or plants. In the late 20th century, composting became popular as an alternative to chemical fertilization of crops. Compost is organic and has the virtue of not adding chemicals or nitrates in excessive proportions to the soil. Of course, the question arises whenever composting is an issue in gardening of what plant matter should be composted in. One popular method is the use of a compost barrel.
While a compost barrel can range from as few as 5 gallons to as much as 55 gallons in size, it is most commonly the 55 gallon size that is used for composting. The most important thing when choosing your barrel is to be sure that it has not been used previously for toxic chemicals or other hazardous materials. This could contaminate the compost and subsequently poison or otherwise harm you. Generally, a barrel made of plastic of about 250 litres works very well. Many people choose barrels that are food safe. If you have an interested in recycling, you may find that you are able to get your barrel from a food service org. or even a restaurant. If it has been used for deep frying oil, you will need to scrub it clean to get all traces of food out of the barrel.
Once you have your compost barrel cleaned and ready to go, you should drill half inch holes all over the barrel, in about six to nine rows. Make the holes approx 4 to 6 inches apart, and then make a number of holes in the very bottom of the barrel to enable the drainage of extra moisture. Make sure that if you are opening your compost container from the top the lid is hinged as well as latched. Many people turn their compost by rolling the barrel around their yard, which could be disastrous if the lid should come open. You may additionally create an opening on the side of your barrel, again ensuring that it has hinges so that you can open it and a latch meaning that it can be securely closed and locked while you are rolling it to turn the compost.
Of course, a compost barrel is not the only structure in which you can create compost. You can also make or buy a compost bin. In addition, with just a length of builders cloth or galvanized wire fencing you can create a compost bin that is easy to move from place to place. You can also buy readily made compost structures, but these can cost quite a bit.

Before anything else, you have to purchase grape vines and after that securing the grape vines’ shoots to the trellis has many advantages. What we mean by securing the shoots is to tie the shoot to the trellis wire, so as when the wind blows it will not damage or break the shoot or that bunches don’t get damaged. The biggest advantage of securing shoots to the trellis wires is that your grapes will hang loose from the canopy. This will ensure that the grape bunches get proper sunlight and spray exposure. It is also important caring and looking after grapevines is needed.
When growing grapes for eating or also known as table grapes, the bunch sizes and weight is much larger than those of wine grapes and will increase or get heavier as the season progress and the grapes ripen. If a bunch of grapevine loosely hangs from an unattached shoot, it will pull the shoot down, into the row and in the end will hang beneath the canopy (fruiting zone). These grapes that hang loose from the canopy get damaged easily if you cultivate your vineyards with a tractor or spray pump.
How to anchor the shoot? Up until a few years ago, we grape growers twined the shoots around the trellis wires. With a normal gable trellis, there are only five trellis wires and allot of shoots, so many of the shoots had to be bundled together before it is twined on the trellis wires - which off course made these shoots look like a “sausage” of shoots on the wire.
I discovered that these “sausages” were the starting point of many diseases and problems, as there is almost zero sunlight penetration or airflow inside the bundles. I tried searching for alternative, when I discovered that when I simply take the shoot, bend it down and just tie it to the trellis wires with a plastic string, I get a well spaced canopy with grapes still hanging loose as well.
You could go without anchoring shoots on your grape vine, but although a bit more labor ous, the securing of shoots will result in you growing far better quality grapes, with much less diseases. If you apply all of these, how do grapes grow in th trellis is just a walk in the park.

The headline read: “Obama Opposes Tariffs on Nations That Don’t Limit Greenhouse Gas Emissions.” Well, of course he would.
To this blog, his objection seems pretty self-serving given that the United States prior refusal to agree to the Kyoto Accord and now with the chances of H.R.2454 gaining Senate approval equivalent to that of a snowball’s chance in a gasifier. We are a principle source of GHG and ecocidally refuse to place limits on anthropogenic emissions contributing to catastrophic degradation of the Earth’s atmosphere.

A funny thing happened to me on the way to Copenhagen…
But, upon what this blog really wanted to comment was the observation made by House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) about H.R. 2454, “people deserve to know what’s in this pile of shit.” Rather than just add my $0.02 to the 1200 or so other responses to the HuffPo post, this post is praise for the Representative’s foresight.
Think about it. A big pile of crap can be feedstock for anaerobic digestion producing a digestate that can be used as fertilizer plus gases from which methane can be extracted. Such a process is much more environmentally responsible than… say a pipeline from the Alberta tar sands.
So, while “woefully inadequate when it comes to doing what scientists say is necessary to prevent catastrophic climate change” or when it comes to satisfying the rest of the world that we are making any effort at all to reduce our per capita GHG emissions, H.R. 2454 as it left the House, and forthcoming “action” by the Senate does give the Congress critters the opportunity to show everyone just how corrupt they have become when life as we know it is in the balance.
